The Study on Operational Style and Efficiency of International Tourist Hotels in Taiwan

It not only provides the services of stay and meal, but the business is also growing day by day. The service of hotel business varies to reach customers’ needs therefore it is the core of tourist business. The two-day weekend system was carried out on the second and fourth week which started in 1998, and in 2001 the government officials and schools all over the whole nation have applied to the new two-day weekend system, and the leisure concept is changing nowadays. This made the frequency of domestic tourist business increase day by day, and it would bring up the needs on the market of ITH. According to the Ministry of Communications Tourism statistic records, in 1998, there were 24 out of 53 international tourist hotels showed negative profit on ‘ratio of making a profit’. It showed one half of the ITH business made no profit. Face to this problem, the question of how to promote ITH business is urgent. This study investigated the relationship of ITH operational type (e.g., independent operation, chain, management contract, and domestic chain) and its efficiency. This study is based on the rationale of Farrell’s (1957) concept of Efficiency Frontier, by means of the relation between the factor of ITH income and investment, to use mathematic programming supplemented by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to figure out the relative efficiency. The result of this study is that among 53 international tourist hotels, 36% of hotel operation complied relative efficiency. The standard deviation of operational efficiency was 0.863. More over operational efficiency is promoted along with the development of business operation. It was discovered that due to the test of simple variable operational style and operational efficiency, various operational styles of ITH has no effect on its operational efficiency, but if the above mentioned four operational styles were categorized to two different operational styles (e.g., dependent and independent; domestic and international), the difference of the operational style of ITH will effect on its operational efficiency. The results showed that the efficiency of dependent operational style is higher than independent operational style whereas the efficiency of domestic operational style is lower than international operational style.
