Tapered members often used to achieve economy in order to save weight, or to satisfy architectural requirements in steel structural design. However, it is found that the subject of nonprismatic member has been studied very little for most of the research reports or papers in recent 30 years. For example, those charts for effective length factor, Kγ, provided by ASD and LRFD Specifications are only applicable for single-bay and single-story framed structures. Due to that the application of those charts is limited by some restrictions, designers often discard using tapered member in their structural design works. In order to solve this difficulties. Discrete Element Model and incremental typed numerical method are used for developing a modified stiffness matrix method and a computer program with a very high generality to solve structural stability inelastic problem. Material nonlinearity and geometric nonlinearity are both considered for analyzing in this study. This study focuses on the applications and developments of the effective length factors, especially considering the tapered member behaving inelastically. Some results are compared with those from previous researchers. Several typical examples are investigated and discussed. It is seen in this study that the trend of Kγ’s changing due to different parameters.
