Abstract
Low-level red lighting has traditionally been employed in all submarine control areas, including the sonar and radar control room. This study investigates the effects of illumination factors on visual performance and visual fatigue during visual display terminal(VDT)work. Ten college students (5 males and 5 females)are recruited as participants to perform eight different experiment tasks. A statistical completely random design is utilized with four light colors (red, blue, green and white),and two illumination levels (20lux and 340lux). The dependent variables are the change of critical fusion frequency (CFF), visual acuity, visual distance, searching time of targets, correct percentage of targets ,and items in a subjective questionnaire. The ANOVA and Duncan analysis show that:(1)The color of light has significant effect on visual acuity;(2)The illumination has significant effect on searching time of targets; and (3)The subjects do not like to perform VDT work under the red light .
Based on these finding, the designers can adopt different combinations of light colors and illumination levels to promote operators’ visual performance and prevent visual fatigue effectively when designing VDT workstations.
