Summary: | 碩士 === 中山醫學院 === 醫學研究所 === 89 === When treating clients with balance deficits, occupational therapists often omitted the cognitive component of postural control. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interference between simultaneous postural control and the visuospatial memory task. A counterbalanced repeated measures design combined with the modified dual-task paradigm was used for thirty-two healthy, young participants. They performed the Sensory Organization Test, Rhythmic Weight Shift Test and the visuospatial memory task under single-task and dual-task conditions. The results showed that performance of postural control and the visuospatial memory task was significantly poor under the dual-task conditions than under the single-task conditions on equilibrium scores, strategy scores, visual preference ratio, on-axis velocity and mental scores. The findings suggest that therapists might integrate the cognitive component of postural control into the treatment plan of balance training. This study also provides evidence for the task-oriented model of postural control.
