Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 教育研究所 === 89 === The main purpose of the research is to investigate the meaning of schooling and diploma of highly-educated women in different cohort, and to understand the factors that influence them. The research can make us understand how the meaning of schooling and diplomas change in the different historical and social context, and how schooling and diploma affected these women’s life. Besides, the research helps educators appreciate the subjectivity of individual students.
This research applied life history method. Twelve women belonging to different cohorts with the college degree were chosen to be the interviewees. Life history interviews were conducted to collect data, focusing on their experience of schooling, thoughts and actions. The results of the research are listed below highly educated women in different cohort. The meaning of schooling and diploma include human capital, self-proofs, and constraints. The meaning of diploma includes diploma as a signal, indicator of ranks and gatekeeper. The schooling is like a ritual, support, and window. The factors influencing the meaning of schooling and diploma include cohort, family economy, social value or trends, gender, ethnicity, birth order, the educational expectation of parents, and mother’s belief in bringing up their daughter, These factors are related together.
