In this thesis, two kinds of adaptive equalizers capable of forming nonlinear decision boundaries are compared and evaluated. The first one is a functional-link structure, which achieves the required nonlinearities by taking functional expansions of the input signal. The second one is a fuzzy structure, which achieves the nonlinearities by using appropriate fuzzy sets and a set of if-then rules. Extensive computer simulations and performance comparisons have been made in this thesis. Both of the structures significantly outperform the conventional ones.
