It must be solved by practical experience of the engineers. Thus, the thoughts on controlling systems by expert systems have been developed, that is, the expert controller. In this paper, we propose the intelligent PID controller, which attains the following functions to solve those troublesome problems caused by tuning PID parameters. (1) able to stabilize a process based on limited knowledge about dynamic of process. (2) the more understanding about plant, the more possibilities to improve the control of the process. (3) able to select automatically an appropriate controller and parameters according to any user or system requirement. (4) able to monitor, control and display the system performance. (5) able to deal with any unexpected or unstable system performance. (6) all controller structure is open, which is easy to modify, extend, and improve its intelligence according to any user requirement. The whole system includes one PC, one DSP board, and its supporting software. In addition, the programming is coded by Matlab. Finally, we simulate the common plants by using the analogy circuit and use a system of fan and board to verify the performance of the intelligent PID controller. H.K Chiang J.C.
