According to literature, hospitals’ willingness, critical operative factors and hospital characteristics are main factors associated with formation of hospital alliance. However, most studies related to this subjects were concerning theories of hospital strategic alliance;only few of them had focused on empirical subjects. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to examine the interrelationship among factors associated with formation of hospital strategic alliance through an empirical aspect. More than 150 hospitals were surveyed and the results indicate that “cost” is the most important concern for hospitals’ participation in strategic alliance. Small hospitals were more willing to participate in strategic alliance due to their insufficiency in “cost”, “internal resources” and “capacity”. In addition, cost-sharing, risk-sharing, reduction of unnecessary investment and obtaining economic-of-scale were the important factors which influenced hospitals’ willingness to participate in strategic alliance. As the external environments of hospitals become more hostile, hospital administrator must speed up their efforts on combining internal resources and costs. This study suggests that hospital administrators may actively involve in forming alliance. Usually supply-chained alliances are more attractive than other kind of strategic alliances. Hospitals should consider their strategic advantages and disadvantages before participating in any strategic alliance in order to improve their competitive advantages.
