In the present study, we focused on the study the different procession techniques of Rhemanniae Radix on the production of catalpol, an Iriroid Glycosides in Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch var. hueichingensis, by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results demonstrated that cooked Rhemanniae Radix prepared by traditional procession techniques including steam with high pressure and alcholization produced higher content of catapol. Investigation of the catapol content of cooked Rhemanniae Radix in Taiwan markets showed that marketed cooked Rhemanniae Radix chips contained lower amount of catalpol than those made by high pressure. The results of the present study provided a technique to analyze the amount of catapol in Chinese medicinal product Rhemanniae Radix as a guide for raw material preparation in manufacturing the high quality and stable Chinese medicinal products.
