However, most studies ignore the mobility between the self-employed workers and employers and unpaid family workers, and discuss the mobility between the self-employed only. This paper tries to remedy this pitfall and discuss the mobility between self-employed status and other kinds of working statuses for non-agricultural male workers in Taiwan. The data used in this thesis is the matched Taiwan Manpower Utilization (MPU) Survey data sets. As to the empirical setting, we use the transition probability model to analyze the effects of macro and micro-level variables on the probability of transition into and out-of the self-employment status. The main results show that when macro unemployment rates decrease, the probability of transition into the self-employment sector from the employee sector will increase, which support the prosperity-pull effect hypothesis. Similarly, the transition probability from the self-employed sector to the employee sector is sensitive to the variation of unemployment rates. The results show that business cycles have significant impact on the mobility between self-employment and employee sectors. Some other micro-level variables such as the original working conditions also play an significant role in the transition probabilities among various sectors.
