During the Japanese occupation, tradition shophouse still tradition space, but the facade of red brick building in beside road. The MEJI RESTORATION MOVEMENT, they learn architecture language and technique of occident country and built essence similar urban environment. Since 1895 Japanese got Taiwan after, Japanese colonial government devolved modernization experience to Taiwan. Therefore, tradition shophouses effect by urban development produce. At the same time, colonial government introduce new building materials to cut off tradition building materials, and used new technique to monopolize building market, and utilized code to restrain build act. So that tradition shophouse change to have a facade of celebration arch. But in process of the shophouse changing, that will obviously look out facade style by colonial government reform is different civilian to imitate development facade style by oneself. Because the government reforms of facade style which by school training of architect to design, it replaced tradition style which a kind of near Western style, owing to they accepted Western architecture education, and think highly design theory and scale control, so that take on conciseness facade. In the civilian, facade of the shophouse development by the Taiwan artificer imitated, but origin of building habits effect, so that, on the facade take on the feature of local culture. In addition, artificers misunderstand the meaning of Western style, and used not exactly architecture language. Owing to above condition, the artificers used not genuine Western style result, made to facade style becoming to complex. To follow above to explain, the facade of the shophouse was formed the special contexts of society and economic, and its feature reflected then society context. Therefore, the contents through Post-Colonial course to explore the meaning which shophouse facade, from among, to comprehend consciousness of colonial experience, at that time. Because on the colonial economic policy, colonial introduced foreign culture of architecture to win local culture and to make local culture is forced silencing, but colonist unwilling confined, and so, to mix many feature of architecture, to created the other new architecture language, to boycott of government regulated. It was meaning local culture to refuse foreign culture and hybrid the other architecture language on the facade Western style. To reveal “de-centering” characteristic; at the same time, they duplicated colonial architecture, often infiltration other style, and made appertaining legitimacy of colonial style to deteriorate and lost legitimacy authority, and they created more hybrid facade then colonial.
