Abstract:
To be the founder of Sung Ming-Confucianist (宋明儒學),Chou lien-hsi’s(周濂溪)position was settled by “Tong Shu” (《通書》)and “Tai Chi Tu Shuo”(《太極圖說》). In “Tong Shu”, “sincerity”(誠)is the central conception. He settled the theory of sincerity which followed the traditional Confucianist conception. In “TaiChi Tu Shuo”(《太極圖說》),Chou lien-his settled a theory of cosmology. “Tai Chi”(太極)is the central conception in “Tai Chi Tu Shuo”. According to “Chung Yung”(《中庸》)and “I Chuan”(《易傳》), his metaphysics influences the Sung Ming-Confucianism. In addition, he thought that sincerity is the way of humankind and “Chung 、Cheng、Jen、I”(中、正、仁、義)is also the way of “Jen Chi”(人極), The conception of Chou lien-hsi settled up his position in traditional Confucianism. Therefore , we can realize Chou lien-hsi’s conventions from traditional Confucianism and his development in Sung Ming Confucianism in his conception of the relationship between heaven and humankind.
Chou lien-hsi thought that sincerity is the way of heaven in “Tong Shu”. Sincerity to be the way of heaven really exists, and it is in every matter’s nature. Sincerity can bring comminucation between heaven and humankind. By sincerity, human nature can reach the situation like heaven.
In “Tong Shu”and “Tai Chi Tu Shuo”, Chou lien-hsi raised the conception of “Tai Chi”. In these two books, “Tai Chi”means the way of heaven that really exists. We have to experience “Tai Chi’s”existence by it’s effect in creation. If “Tai Chi”realizes in real world, it becomes the way of “Jen Chi”. Human can experience “Tai Chi”by practice the way of “Jen Chi”. Therefore, heaven can communicate with humankind by the communication between “Tai Chi”and “Jen Chi”.
After discussing the conception of relationship between heaven and humankind of Chou lien-hsi, we found that there are still some defects in his conception. For example, “Jen”(仁)can’t be the highest good, and the human nature can’t be recognize. But his conception contributes to traditional Confucianism and Sung Ming-Confucianism.This is why he is the founder of Sung Ming-Confucianism.
