When we talk about the development of modern music, piano works are particularly influential. And when we discuss the artistry of Debussy''s pieces, it is impossible to overlook his piano works. Debussy has a great love for Chopin''s pieces, so we can find considerable similarity between the works of these two composers. This is clearly shown in Debussy''s piano works. Chopin magnified the range of harmony to make the listeners of his time use their imaginations. Likewise, Debussy broke the limits of many traditional harmonies in his compositions. He composed with his great ear to create the images in his mind. In my thesis, I start with the major events in Debussy''s life and the aesthetics of his artistic creations.I also discuss the relationship between Debussy''s music and impresssionism and symbolism. Then I enter into the subject of Debussy''s Estampes to probe into the background in which Debussy wrote and into his compansing technique.Pragmatically,I propose new interpretations of how to play this piece based on three perspectives:timbre, tempo, and use of pedal. Finally,I put things in order by summarizing Debussy''s contribution to musical history and the influence of Estampes to Debussy''s later works, which leads to my conclusion. In 1903,when Debussy wrote Estampes, this piece represented a new direction in his compositions in which he used many pentatonic scales, variations in tempo,whole-tone scales, chromatic scales, indistinct keys, etc. He accomplished the creation of beautiful dim scenes in his work.Due to the special characteristics of this piece, for a listener and a player, our imagination is easily evoked, natural scenes visualized, and natural sounds heard. This is why I chose this piece for my research subject-so that I could understand the connotations of Debussy''s piano works more fully. After this research,I can understand at first hand this piece in its entirety. 朱象泰 許明鐘 林明慧 2000 學位論文 ; thesis 128 zh-TW
