The toponym was given to a specific area . If the toponmy was classified , it would help understanding the natural environment or reflecting local circumstances of economy , of culture , of politics , of religion and of customs . However , due to the rapid development of societal envuronment , the administrative districts were frequently changed which resulted in the risk of residential identification , and the isolation of man-to-man and man-to-place .
This study adopted the viewpoints of geography and cartography to do the classification of the toponym of Taiwan . In this research a place was chosen as a sample for the database building and operation . The informational system of Taiwan’s districts was simulated and statistical analysis model was created . The combination of the techniques of digital map and toponym in this research suggested the practical use of digital cartography in future .
