The efficacy of education relies on the completeness of its entire structural system. Only with a wholesome system, can education attain its utmost effect. Nevertheless, the education of commercial Design in Taiwan, despite the passing of more than forty years, has not developed a complete structure. Therefore, in this research, using the method of gathering and organizing written sources, we shall examine and discuss the development of the education of commercial design in Taiwan. Primarily, this entails looking into the education of commercial design in the last forty years, from the perspectives of our environment, and the changing of the major/course names. From the above, we shall go further as to analyze the background factors, and mechanism by which the education of commercial design has evolved to what it is today. The following can summarize the results of this research:
After examining the development of the education of commercial design in Taiwan at all stages and from the perspectives of the environmental background, the changes in the name of the major, and the contents of the curriculum, we propose the following as the most important factors affecting business education in Taiwan.
1. Economic Development of the Nation and the Needs of the Society
In response to the manufacturing industries, the changing mode of consumption, and the needs of the students, the education of Commercial Design made several modification in its curriculum contents, and even its name. The names used for this major included “Artistic Designing,” “Artistic Craft,” “Commercial Design,” “Industrial Design,” “Visual Effects Design” and so forth.
2. The Changing Ways of the Media
Changes in today’s media, not only affects the way designing is presented, it also changes the contents of an CommercialDesign education. Like Mr. De-Wen Chang stated, “ ‘design’ education, from the 40’s to the 50’s still employed painting by hand on paper, followed by mostly spray painting in the 60’s, while today we use mostly television, video recorders, industrial photography, enlarged color printing, computer graphics, multimedia, and such other technologically advanced devices.” After the 80’s, with the prevalence of computers, the ways of industrial design has truly changed greatly. Because media is becoming more and more multifaceted, the trend of design education is moving toward greater segregation and specialization.
