碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 資訊工程學研究所 === 88 === This thesis describes a Home Networking System, which integrates the existing technologies, for examples World Wide Web, ChaiServer designed by HP, Wireless Application Protocol and Windows Media Technologies. This system has two key components. 1) A ChaiServer scheme, which provides a Web server technology managing the devices. 2) A transcoding module, which selects the proper content to meet the client capabilities. As a result, this approach makes it easy to manage and access the appliance in the Internet or through WAP mobile phone without specialized client software. This Home Networking System provides a friendly user interface for connecting to the ChaiServer and operating the services provided by the ChaiServer. Upon receiving a request from a client, the server parses the request then sends the result back, which is presented to the client either in the HTML format or in the WML format. The goal of the Home Networking System is to manage all the appliance devices and let devices work together. Based on this principle, we extend the ChaiServer’s infrastructures and integrate all the related technologies to implement our Home Networking System, which contains a CCD camera, a capture card and a sound card. In the end we illustrate that our system works well to the clients as diverse as personal computer and WAP mobile phones.
