A Study on the Industrial Trends of Global Wireless Communications and the Emerging Opportunities in Taiwan
The wireless communications industry clearly has an exciting and explosive future. This study examines the growing trend and the technological advancement, which create emerging market opportunities globally. The study also investigates the competitiveness of Taiwan and the possible models of entry for Taiwan companies to link to the value chain of the wireless communications industry.
With regard to the wireless service business structure, technology, customers, policies and competition are identified as the major driving forces to shape the landscape. The rivalry and the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers are high, the threat of new entrants is medium and the threat of substitute technology is potentially high in the long run. The critical success factors are: economies of scale, technology, licensing plus the management of strategic fit in pricing, quality, channels and value-added service offering.
The low-cost turnkey manufacturing capability, the well-established infrastructure, the highly qualified human resources and the supply of capital market are some of the competitive advantages which make Taiwan an attractive environment for hi-tech wireless products. Currently, Taiwan companies are aggressively engaging in positioning themselves in the value chain of wireless industry. Finally, the study has raised several suggestions that could be applied to companies operating within the booming industry and some directions for future study.
