The data were collected by means of classroom observations, interviews, document analysis and questionnaire.
The main findings were as follows:
1. Students showed different levels of English ability. This would be the major problem for English teaching in Elementary schools in the future.
2. English teachers’ teaching was influenced by the size of the class.
3. Although the English curriculum was implemented at school, students continued going to English cramming school. This affected school’s English teaching.
4. The nature of English teaching differed from that of other subjects. Teachers and administrators had to pay special attention to classroom management in English classes.
5. With the present size of class, most English teachers were confined to use audio-lingual method rather than multiple teaching methods.
6. Fifth and sixth graders were not as highly motivated to learn English as students of lower grades.
Based on the findings, suggestions for English teaching in the Elementary school level include:
1. Ability grouping may solve the problem of significant difference in students’ English ability.
