The development of chiral auxiliaries is a key in the asymmetric catalysis. 1,1'-Bi-2-naphthols(BINOLs) are known as one of the most useful chiral auxiliaries, especially for catalytic asymmetric reactions, enantioselective reduction of ketones, synthesis of chiral macrocycles, molecular recognition and nonlinar optical materials and so on. We have conducted to a study of development of chiral auxiliaries of BIAZOLs. The precurors of BIAZOLs, diethyl 4,6,8-trimethyl or phenyl-2-hydroxyazulene-1,3-dicarboxylates, were synthesized from dicyclopentadiene.
