Using bifenthrin as a target compound, the recovery efficiency of different silica-based solid-phase extraction sorbents, such as C1, C4, C8, C18, and endcapped C18, were studied. The results were compared with SDB sorbent. The superior of the recoveries of SDB is discussed and explained by the relative factors between analyte and sorbents. In the study, the recoveries of C18 were better than endcapped C18 can be explained by the interaction between free silanol of C18 and the halogen atoms of bifenthrin. The study also found the higher recoveries were achieved in mixed-mode solid phase extraction than in single sorbent. The multiple forces and secondary interactions are proposed to explain the retention mechanism of mixed-phase solid phase extraction.
