Relying on participatory observation and in-depth interviews to collect necessary data, the researcher spent 11 months actually living in a village, participating in the daily lives of the locals. The object of this study was to understand the following two aspects: 1. What are the daily activities and interactions found within the tribe? What attitude towards education do they propagate and what cultural implications do these have? 2. What are the parents’ attitudes towards rearing and educating their children? How do they view schools? To what degree do they participate in their children’s school education? And what is the reason behind these attitudes and behavioral patterns? This research has found that the lively, broadminded character of the Amei, and their willingness to take things as they come, find no real conflict with the activities of either school or the church. The concepts propagated in the life of the tribe were built upon respect for elders and superiors, and emphasized the value of honour and sharing amongst themselves. In the cases studied, the parental educational values were expressed with the following characteristics: 1. Expectations based upon the individual’s abilities; 2. Cultivating children’s individual abilities to make a living; 3. Creating an educational environment based on children’s interests and, 4. Educating children by explaining and imbuing matters of concern. To conclude, I will discuss the current educational structure of the aboriginal people of Taiwan, as well as the problems of discrimination and prejudice that they face in their daily lives, that stem from the differences they have, in terms of approaches to life and education, from the Han-Chinese. Finally, it is hoped that an understanding of the differences in this culture will help the mainstream culture to respect and appreciate it, allowing both the Han-Chinese and aboriginal cultures to co-exist in Taiwan.
