碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 電機工程學系 === 88 === With the rapid growth of Internet, it is not adequate for many applications to apply HTML in presenting their data. XML is an emerging standard for data description on Internet. As we can expect in the future, there will be more and more data encoded with XML. At that time, retrieval and search on XML data will be an important issue. On observing this trend, we designed and implemented a search system based on the structural and self-descriptive features of XML documents. In this thesis, we describe the search engine in our XML Search System. This search engine supports XQL and Chinese. The XQL is well-designed language for the search and query of an XML document. In the design of the indexer of the search engine, we propose a method called “Inheritance Identification Expression” to represent the hierarchy of an XML document for searching by XQL. The search engine uses the expression to implement the functions of XQL. The standard for the character encoding of XML data is Unicode, so documents with Big5 code may encounter problems in the XML world. We also discuss and explain how Chinese can be enabled in our search engine.
