The virtual environment, an interface between the participant and computers, is consist of massive quantities of digital data and images in which a three dimensional synthetic environment is created. It provides interactive, immersive and multisensory spatial experiences to the participant. By using real-time updated data in response to the participant’s motions and various interactive interfaces, it can give the participant a sense of being in the environment. The purposes of this design thesis are to look for traits and development limits of virtual environments, and to contemplate its spatial style, thus helpful to the nowadays digital—era designers’ creativities of architecture and spatial design. The procedure of this thesis is, first comparing and analyzing the differences between real and virtual environments, and then fully understanding the traits and limitations of the latter. By clearly defining the three relationships between real and virtual environments, i.e., replacement, complement, and independence, and subtly using three design manipulations, i.e., crystal gallery, painting studio, and digital cinematheque, the context and atmosphere of virtual environments are thoroughly studied with the proposal of design concepts and discussion of related issues. Hence the feasibilities and directions of development of virtual environments are subsequently enlightened. The process of the design manipulations show that the context and atmosphere of virtual environments could be achieved through the use of visual and acoustic experiences in multimedia environments. Forms and compositions of the context are founded on the mutual relationships between forms and information in which forms must come with information. Providing the spatial experiences and settings that are familiar to the participant, the designer can make the participant and environments reach the best status. Attributes of the information can also be well interpreted through the spatial design. Traits of the context and atmosphere of virtual environments are explored via the notions established in the former part of the thesis, designs together with issues discussion in the latter portion of which. Other relevant issues such as “Dialogue between space and information”, “Development of spatial sensational experiences”, “Multiple sociality”, and “Search for architecture forms of a new-era” are also addressed. It is the author’s hope that this thesis can provide a new direction towards the design notion, and in turn the experiences accumulated and inspirations gained can bring sparks to the future virtual environment design and other relevant discussions.
