It has been found that chitosan is nontoxic as well as biodegradable and is considerable to use in biomedical applications. Therefore, numerous attempts have been made to investigate the chemical synthesis and physical properties of chitosan due to its potential. In this study, phthaloyl group was introduced into chitosan backbone in order to reduce the intensity of intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bondings and the modified chitosan derivative could be dissolved in common organic solvents. With the improvement in the solubility of chitosan derivative, it facilitated the grafting of photosensitive groups to the chitosan derivative and expanded the applications of chitosan. The results revealed that the degree of crosslinking tended to be stable in forty minutes and the fully crosslinked chitosan derivative possessed poor swelling properties. Synthesis of another photocrosslinkable hydrogel, PEGA, was also carried out in this study. Photocrosslinkable chitosan was blended with PEGA and crosslinked randomly under UV irradiation. From adhesion test and swelling test of the blend material, compared with photocrosslinkable chitosan derivative, it showed obvious raises of the adhesive and swelling abilities. Possible thermal properties of chitosan and depolymerized chitosan were investigated with DSC and TGA, and the thermal property changes of chitosan derivatives were also discussed.
