Knowledge Flow Process of TFT LCD Industry in Taiwan from the Perspectives of Organizational Internal Networking and External Networking
ABSTRACT
The company’s source of innovation comes from continuous knowledge capital. In the company, knowledge is obtained by the linkage of internal networking and external networking. When the knowledge flows into the company, every lever or department must have appropriately mechanism of internal linkage to get the knowledge flow into the company, and become the company’s knowledge capital.
This research focuses on TFT LCD industry in Taiwan. It explores the knowledge flow process of the TFT LCD industry’s companies from the perspectives of organizational internal networking and external networking. It tries to record the TFT LCD industry’s developed process. It also tries to sum up the characteristics of the TFT LCD industry’s companies so that it could offer some references to the TFT LCD industry’s companies in this field.
Objectives
This thesis tries to confer knowledge flow process of TFT LCD industry in Taiwan and how the internal networking and external networking to affect knowledge flow process. This thesis makes use of case study to sum up the characteristics of TFT LCD industry in Taiwan. The topics for discussion are as follows:
1. How does the characteristic of technical knowledge affect external networking?
2. How do the internal networking and external networking affect knowledge flow process?
2.1 How does the external networking affect knowledge flow process?
2.2 How does the internal networking affect knowledge flow process?
3. What are the characteristics of innovation in TFT LCD industry in Taiwan?
Research Structure
According to literature survey and preliminary analysis of case study, knowledge flow process is affected by the internal networking and external networking, and external networking is affected by the characteristic of technical knowledge.
Case Choice
In Taiwan, there are six main companies in TFT LCD industry. It includes Chunghwa Picture Tubes., LTD., Acer Display Technology Inc., Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation, HannStar Display Corporation, Chi Jing Electronics Corporation, and Quanta Display Inc. For the purpose of case study, this thesis chooses these six companies as studies cases.
Research Methodology
This thesis mainly adopts the case study using personally in-depth managers and engineers interviews. The author also collects secondary data. It is supplement to case analysis and conclusions inference. Because the interviewers are unwilling to make known to the public, the author uses code names to replace their real names.
Case Analysis and Conclusions
According to the analyses of the six cases, the author has generated the following conclusions:
1. The characteristic of technical knowledge affects external networking including:
Different types of path dependencies of organizational technical knowledge have different relationship of close degree between the organization and the source of technical knowledge absorption. The more the path dependency of organizational technical knowledge is, the looser the relationship between the organization and the source of technical knowledge absorption is. The less the path dependency of organizational technical knowledge is, the tighter the relationship between the organization and the source of technical knowledge absorption is.
Different types of path dependencies of organizational technical knowledge have different modes to absorb suppliers’ technical knowledge. When the path dependency of Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise’s organizational technical knowledge is more, Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise adopts co-development mode to absorb technical knowledge of technical transfer. When the path dependency of Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise’s organizational technical knowledge is less, Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise adopts delivery mode to absorb technical knowledge of the equipment suppliers. And the equipment suppliers provide related documents and send personnel to Taiwan’s TFT LCD factories to provide help.
2. The external networking affects knowledge flow process including:
Different relationships of close degree between the organizations and the sources of technical knowledge absorption have different modes of interaction to manage knowledge absorbing. When the relationship between Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise and the source of technical knowledge absorption is tighter, Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise adopts continuous interaction mode to manage knowledge absorbing. When the relationship between Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise and the source of technical knowledge absorption is looser, Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise doesn’t adopt continuous interaction mode to manage knowledge absorbing.
3. The internal networking affects knowledge flow process including:
Sharing of knowledge experiences is contributive to organizational knowledge creation and storage during conversion process. Making use of master and apprentice system and on-job training to share knowledge experiences is contributive to knowledge storage and spread during socialization process. Making use of writing documents to share knowledge experiences is contributive to knowledge storage and spread during externalization process. Making use of facing to face to communicate with each other, including calling meetings and designing room, to share knowledge experiences is contributive to knowledge creation during combination process. Making use of intranet to share knowledge experiences is contributive to knowledge storage and spread during combination process.
Having knowledge-creating crew is contributive to organizational knowledge flow process. Taiwan’s TFT LCD industrial knowledge operators make use of going to learning by themselves in Japan to step up organizational knowledge absorption during socialization process. Taiwan’s TFT LCD industrial knowledge operators make use of writing training contents to document to step up organizational knowledge storage during externalization process. Taiwan’s TFT LCD industrial knowledge officers belong to T type persons, and it is contributive to knowledge creation that they make use of calling meetings to communicate organizational vision.
In organization, the linkage and transference of RD department and product department is contributive to solving problems during knowledge creating process. Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise steps up solving problems by interacting the workers of RD department and product department.
4. The characteristics of innovation in TFT LCD industry in Taiwan are including:
During the springing up of TFT LCD industry in Taiwan, to avoid technology risk and market risk, TFT LCD enterprises adopt difference methods as follows:
In order to reduce technology risk, they adopt the models of co-development、exclusive and joint venture to keep tight relationship with their own Japan’s technology transfer companies.
In order to reduce market risk, they adopt these methods, including selling product to their parent companies and OEM for their Japan’s technology transfer companies.
When a parent company invests different industry─Taiwan’s TFT LCD industry, it makes use of power of its group to help organizational knowledge flow, including sending high-level managers and product engineers and providing technical knowledge and experience of management.
In transferring of capability of product development, Taiwan’s TFT LCD enterprise has succeeded to reach second level, and establishes its core capabilities in physical system、managerial system、knowledge and skill and value and norm.
During the springing up of TFT LCD industry in Taiwan, besides providing technical knowledge, ITRI also plays the role of providing talents to help organizational knowledge flow in Taiwan’s TFT LCD industry.
During the springing up of TFT LCD industry in Taiwan, innovating CEO makes use of bearing intelligent failure and molds care and learning environment in organization to help organizational knowledge flow.
