The antioxidant activities of five traditional Chinese medicinal prescriptions: Shiee-Fuu-Jwu-Iu-Tang (SFJIT), Oh-Yaw-Shuen-Chin-Saan (OYSCS), Buu-Yang-Hwan-Wuu-Tang (BYHWT), Sheau-Shiuh-Ming-Tang (SSMT) and Chir-Hwu-Jia-Long-Guu-Muu-Lih-Tang (CHJLGMLT) were investigated in anti-lipid peroxidation, anti-superoxide formation and free radical scavenger activity, which were examined by means of FeCl2-ascorbic acid induced lipid peroxidation, xanthine oxidase inhibition, cytochrome C system and an electron spin resonance(ESR) spectrometer, respectively. The results showed that CHJLGMLT has more anti-lipid peroxidation and anti-superoxide formation effects than other prescriptions, CHJLGMLT showed the greatest superoxide radical scavenger activity and BYHWT showed the greatest hydroxyl radical scavenger activity.It is also proved that these prescriptions decreased the level of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in serum on high cholesterol-fed rats. From these results, it seems likely that these prescriptions may be effective in the prevention and therapy of stroke which formed in the ischemic patients. Vitis thunbergii, Chrysanthemum morifloium, Hibiscus sabdariffa Rhinacanthus nasutus, Boehmeria nivea, Agastache rugosa, Peerilla frutescens Britten var, Luffa cylindrica, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Haraella retrocalla, Mesona procumbens, Cacavalia gladiata, Ficus pumil, Houttuynia cordata, Ganoderma lucidum and Pteris ensiformis, are folk medicine in Taiwan, were investigated in anti-lipid peroxidation, anti-superoxide formation and free radical scavenger activity, which were examined by means of FeCl2-ascorbic acid induced lipid peroxidation, xanthine oxidase inhibition, cytochrome C system, respectively. The results showed that Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Vitis thunbergi, Chrysanthemum morifloium, Boehmeria nivea, have more anti-lipid peroxidation and superoxide radical scavenger effects than other crude drugs. Hibiscus sabdariffa, Ficus pumil, Vitis thunbergi, Chrysanthemum morifloium showed the greatest anti-superoxide formation activity.
