However, the source of original propolis and extracting solvents probably greatly changed the quality of propolis. And the functions of propolis in vivo were still unknown. In this study, 9 original propolis (from Taiwan, China, and Brazil) were used to evaluate the antioxidative ability and antimutagenic efficiency by different solvent extraction. Finally, the antioxidation, blood lipid regulation, and immunal performance were also determined by human study. Result clearly showed that Chinese propolis exhibited the best antioxidative ability. Both ethanolic and aqueous extracts of propolis showed good antioxidative ability, and great scavenging efficiency for superoxide anion, hydroperoxide, hydroxyl and DPPH radicals. They were also found to chelate Fe2+. The mutagenic study showed that mutagenicity induced with t-BuOOH, MNNG, and IQ were all significantly inhibited by both extracts of propolis . And the ethanolic extract of propolis showed better antimutagenicity than the aqueous one. The human study showed that propolis effectively delayed the LDL oxidation, but propolis did not affect the blood regulation and immunal function. Chin-Kun Wang 王進崑 2000 學位論文 ; thesis 99 zh-TW
