Summary: | 碩士 === 長庚大學 === 護理學研究所 === 88 === A qualitative research design was used to explore the caregiving tasks and the caregiving difficulties of family caregivers of elderly patients with hip fracture. In-depth face-to-face interviews with participant observations was used to collect data from 10 primary caregivers within one month after hospital discharge. Interviews were tape recorded and transcibed verbatim. Data were analyzed according to guidelines provided by Mile and Huberman(1994). Results indicated that caregiving tasks encompassed hip fracture related care tasks, such as futher fall prevation, hip joint related rehabilitation, assessment for fractured joint, helping hospital visits, and discomfort management; and daily living care tasks, such as personal care, domestic care, mental/social support, and family resources management.
Results showed that caregiving felt difficulties can come from : 1) elderly patients, such as disagreement with caregiver in medical regimen and poor body function which did not reach the expections of caregivers;2) family caregivers, such as health information deficit and care skills inadequate;3) family resources/equipment, such as substitutive resources insufficiency, inconsistency of care principle among caregivers, and inadequate enviroment/equipmen for the elderly patients.
The findings of this study can increase nursing knowledge in understanding caregiving tasks and associated difficulties for family caregivers of hip fractured elderly persons. The findings can also provide a base for developing home nursing services for hip fractured elderly persons to increase the quality of their family care.
