Critical values of process parameters were used to investigate process safety. Parameter sensitivity is discussed for a wide range of operating conditions. Direct search method and input/output mapping method based on the neural network approach were applied to obtain the critical value of delta for safe operation. Comparison of these two methods in obtaining a safe operation condition reveals that the former method is much more reliable than the latter method especially as the value of the parameter alfa is increased. A two-stage parameter estimation method was proposed to obtain the kinetic parameters and heat of reaction from an available adiabatic temperature profile. Application of the direct search method, the operating conditions for safe operation calculated based on the given or estimated system parameters were examined. Our conclusion is that it is advisable to apply conservatively the operating condition for safe operation in a highly exothermic chemical batch reactor based on the estimated system parameters.
