Abstract:
Viewing generally from Corsica’s history, Corsica was under the control of Greece and the Roman Empire until integrated into France. With its misfortunate destiny, it was the most miserable island in the Mediterranean. After World War II, the Corsica’s ethnic consciousness resurged. The Corsican felt discontent and angry gradually, because the French government regarded Corsica as a colony. At the beginning of 1960s, every kind of petitionary movement (cultural, economical and political) sprang up. Many young Corsican wanted to get rid of the French governance and control and searched for all of the rights which were deprived by France, therefore, a variety of group or organization appeared also one after another. They hoped Corsica could be granted a special status constitutionally by the French government, which their rights in culture, economy and politics could be protected. However, after 1975, the autonomy movement turned into a violent dimension till that Corsica became a “magazine” of France and the lives and property of Corsican were threaten seriously. Hence, how to resolve Corsica’s current but deep-rooted problem is the most important for French government.
The thesis presents the cause and effect of the autonomy movement of Corsica. Firstly, it discusses the history of Corsica in order to understand the miserable destiny of Corsica and the desires of getting rid of the governance and control of foreign people. Secondly, it interprets the process of the autonomy movement of Corsica, the rise of the regionalism, the rebel of the autonomy movement, the occurrence of the violence. At the last, it states the actual status of Corsica and the competence of the local government as well as the relationship between the Corsica and European Union. In conclusion, besides the analysis of the cause and effect of the autonomy movement of Corsica, it presents how the French government deals with the Corsica’s problems and the future of the Corsica. Besides introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into the following chapters: 1.The historical background of the Corsica. 2.The problems of the Corsica. 3.The process of the autonomy movement of Corsica. 4.The status of the Corsica and the relationship between Corsica and the European Union.
