The data structure used by OLAP is called data cube. The data cube is constructed from multidimensional data structures and is used to support data manipulations such as pivoting, slicing & dicing, drill down and roll up, etc. In this thesis, a data ring model is proposed as a metaphor for the user to directly manipulate and visualize the data cube. The key feature of the data ring model is that it overcomes the problem of displaying multidimensional chart on OLAP system. In addition, by using charts as the primary tool instead of tables, the data analysis process can be conducted in a more intuitive way. Operations of the data ring are translated to SQL statements, which allows the data ring to operate directly on relational databases.
