Using bare MgO as a catalyst , the reaction produced 2-methyl cyclohexanol as main product and the yield of that was 31% at 400℃. After adding Ag to MgO,(Ag (0.05wt%)/MgO) the catalysts activity increased, to which of 2-methyl cyclohexanol raech to 37% . The activity of Ag(0.05wt%)/MgO was further improved by adding Cs, the yield of 2-methyl cyclohexanol increased to 46% , as Cs(0.01wt%)-Ag (0.05wt%)/MgO was used as a catalyst. Prolong the contact time or raise the reaction temperature decrease the selectivity to 2-methyl cyclohexanol , owing to the 2-methyl cyclohexanol may further react with methanol to form 2,6-dimethyl phenol and 2,4,6-trimethyl phenol . The BET measurement and TPD spectra indicate that loading of Cs increase both the surface areas and the acid amount of the catalyst . The FT-IR spectra indicate that the methanol obsorbed on the surface of the catalyst was easy to lose its H of O-H groups to form H3C-O species , which can react with cyclohexanol to form 2-methyl cyclohexanol at 400℃.
