The shear taken by the web of a steel I beam can exceed 97 per cent of the total sectional shear force. The sectional shear force of a reinforced concrete is mainly resisted by the reinforcing shear bar, but the shear at the web of a short reinforced concrete beam also causes an opening crack with an inclined angle of 45 degrees. A short beam of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) is composed of a steel beam and a conventional reinforced concrete (RC) beam will have a different shear strength, toughness and failure behavior from the above-mentioned two types of beams. This study executed shear load experiments on 20 pieces of short steel, reinforced concrete and SRC beams to investigate their shear strength and toughness. Experimental results showed that:(1) The shear strength of SRC beam obtained from the superposition of those of RC and steel beams indicates a relatively conservative value; (2) The effect of shear studs on the shear strength and toughness of SRC beam is insignificant; (3) The shear strength of SRC beam can be reduced by 10 per cent due to an improper casting of concrete; (4) The ductility of an SRC beam is better than that of a RC beam; (5) The ductility of an SRC beam increases with the increasing amount of shear reinforcing bars.
