Survey is adopted for the study. Ninety-eight mothers participated in the study by purposive sampling from a Medical Center in Taipei. A structured questionnaire including a stress scale and a coping scale were the instrument used to collect information on perceived stress and coping methods from subject via structured interviews or self-reports. The data were analyzed with description statistics, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation through SPSS/PC computer program. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1.The results indicated that the structural factors of stresses of these mothers could be divided into four categories: (a) stress from the sick child,(b) stress from the mother herself,(c) stress from the medical care and (d) stress from interpersonal relationships and communication . There was a wide range of level of stress among the mothers in the study, and the stress from the sick child was the highest level of stress among the four categories. 2.According to the research, there were some factors to be related to stress level of these mothers, such as mothers’ ages, religions, support systems, and children’s illness type, the time of the latest protein urine showed, the phase of treatment protocol, hospitalized with nephritic syndrome. 3.The structural factors of coping methods of these mothers could be divided into three categories: (a) emotional oriented coping method, (b) problematic oriented coping method, and (c)"running its course" oriented coping method. The problematic oriented coping method was the most frequently employed by these mothers, and emotional oriented coping method was the least. 4. Significant difference in employed frequency of coping method were found to be related to mothers’ occupations, standard of education, numbers of children in the family, support resources, and children’s standard of education, age of being diagnosed as nephritic syndrome , illness type, hospitalized with nephritic syndrome . 5.There were a significant positive correlation between perceived stress and coping methods. To sum up, the findings of this study may help nursing professionals to get better and deeper understanding for stress and coping methods in mothers with nephritic syndrome children, and supply suitable help to them. Thus, it would advance nurse’s competence of helping sick children and their families to manage stress and coping effectively. Key word : nephritic syndrome , perceived stress , and coping method .
