Patients with colostomy usually feel that they lose the intactness and control of their bodies. The negative influences of colostomy on the patients'' daily lives and quality of life should be minimized. Knowledge and behaviors about taking care of the colostomy are very important. Patients have to learn how to deal with their colostomies physically and psychologically. In Taiwan, many efforts has been made to educate the patient who has colostomy, but no quantitative study about the relation between the ability of self care and quality of life of these patients has been done. This study investigated 90 patients in Taipei area. Through purposive sampling and structural questionnaires, the knowledge and performance of stoma care and quality of life of subjects were evaluated. The relations among knowledge of self-care, behaviors of self-care, and quality of life of these patients were also analyzed. The results showed: 1. Sixty eight percent of patients correctly answered the questions about the knowledge of self-care. They have best knowledge of stoma care technique and its related activities. 2. There are 59% of patients with colostomy perform the stoma care correctly. They are best at stoma care and worst at colostomy irrigation. 3. The quality of life of patients with colostomy was estimated with Chinese quality of life index. The average score was 20.11±3.56, which meant these patients ranked among the "middle levels" of quality of life. 4. The knowledge of self-care, behaviors of self-care, and quality of life had positive correlation with each other. It showed that the patients who had more knowledge of colostomy care were able to perform their stoma self-care better. These patients also have better quality of life. 5. Among the patients background, self-care knowledge, and performance of self-care, self perceived-health, education, and status of marriage can explain 53.1% of the variance of quality of life. Patients who had better self-perceived health, higher education and a spouse had better quality of life. The results of this study add knowledge on the relation between the colostomy patients'' self-care knowledge, self-care behaviors, and quality of life. These findings can serve as a further reference for nursing professionals to perform continuous care and to educate of colostomy patients after they''ve been discharged from the hospital. It helps the nursing professionals to improve quality of life of colostomy patients by providing self-care knowledge effectively and continuously, and reinforcing implementation of self-care behaviors. Colostomy is a necessary procedure in treating certain diseases to prolong the patients'' life span, but it can cause big changes in the body structure and the way of defecation. The results showed:
