碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 資訊工程學研究所 === 87 === WebNFS, a new member of NFS protocol family, was proposed to overcom the weakness of the old NFS protocols (version 2 and version 3) when they are applied to WANs. WebNFS also expands the file sharing of NFS to the Internet environment. In this article, we will discuss an implementation of a WebNFS system, which includes a server running on FreeBSD and a client running on MS-Windows 98. The system also demonstrates that the NFS system is independent of the operating systems. NFS suffers a drop of efficiency when doing remote file copy because of its design. To eliminate this, we extend the protocol to improve the efficiency by reducing transmission over the network. In addition, we use the public file handle of WebNFS to implement a portable, uniform personal desktop environment.
