In an environment of global competition, enterprises must allocate their resources in the best way to survive and expand. Enterprise resource planning(ERP)system is a powerful information management system which can help enterprises to allocate their resources best. ERP systems focus on integrating the information of main functions in an enterprise, and have broad impact on the enterprise. For this reason, factors affecting ERP adoption are certainly more complicated than those affecting other information system adoptions. Because of the importance of ERP adoption for future competition and the lackness of related empirical studies, this research attempts to investigate the factors which affect the enterprises in Taiwan in their tendency to adopt ERP systems. Based on the results, this study also intends to provide suggestions to the suppliers and consulting firms of ERP packages. This study utilizes the Adoption Process Model by Rogers(1983)to develop the hypotheses, and examines relationships in the "Perception-Persuasion-Decision" process. Factors in the perception step are selected from four dimensions: characteristics of business environment, enterprises, suppliers and ERP systems. We posit that they might influence the three factors in the persuasion step: perceived usefulness of ERP, perceived risk of ERP and perceived easiness of ERP adoption. All the factors mentioned above in turn affect the tendency of a company to adopt ERP systems. Questionnaires were mailed to the heads of MIS divisions in 750 firms whose owners equities are above 50 million NT dollars. After analyzing 189 useful samples with multiple regressions and Pearson correlation, the study finds: 1. Five selected factors significantly affect the perceived usefulness of ERP systems. 2. Three chosen factors significantly affect the perceived risk of ERP systems. 3. The perceived easiness of adoption has significant positive impact on ERP adoption. 4. Fourteen factors in the perception step significantly affect the tendency of a company to adopt ERP systems. Based on the results, the study suggests:(1)The suppliers and consulting firms of ERP packages should put their marketing focus on the easiness of ERP adoption.(2)The enterprise should concentrate most on how the match of their needs and the functions of ERP systems when they decide whether to adopt ERP systems.
