Abstract
The study aimed at understanding the secret world of 20 second graders through observation and interviews. From August 1998 to June 1999, the researcher did 57 observations at school, 47 interviews with the 20 children and their teachers, and participated the morning activities held every Wednesday. What follows are some major findings about these children''''s secret world:
(1) The contents and ways of expressing secrets:
The secrets were expressed mainly in three ways: possessing private space, writing, and talking. The contents of the secrets include social behavioral problems, embarrassment, coping strategies, intimate experiences and feelings, possession, hurt experiences, puzzlement, expectation and nuisances.
(2) The secrets and the development of self:
The discourse on secrets shows some traces of self development. The children became more keenly aware of how their bodies should be treated and found out more about the differences between their peers and themselves. Making judgement on as well as being emotionally aware of their own actions as well as those of their peers seemed to help these children to understand their own personalities better.
(3) The secrets and the interpersonal relationships:
Trust mutual feelings were important bases on which the sharing of the secrets became possible. Gender also influenced how the children chose whom to share the secretes with.
The researcher suggests that other researchers can explore the following aspects of children''''s secret world, such as how the secrets relates to children''''s cognitive development, emotional experiences and how their families influence the discourse and construction of children''''s secrets.
