Integrated CNS/ATM can offer avionics with the benefits of increased functional flexibility, reduced cost, and simplified infrastructures of airborne avionics as well as ground aviation management system. In data communications for CNS/ATM, VHF Digital Link (VDL) has the advantages of higher data transmission rate and larger system capacity; consequently it will gradually replace the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) in the near future. In this thesis, we focus on the research of VDL mode4 proposed in 1996, which utilizes GMSK modulation and self-organized TDMA technology. A prototype system which meets the physical layer protocols is designed and its performance is assessed. During the preliminary design phase, it usually requires repeated modifications on each module of the transceiver in order to meet the specifications. To greatly reduce the cost of research and development, the DSP on-line simulator (LabVIEW) and the associated wideband ADC and DAC module boards are used to simulate, design and test the VDL transceiver system, and evaluate its performance over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. In addition to establish the key technology for baseband/IF band software radio, the prototype system is developed under the considerations of DSP chip-based implementation, that makes it more valuable for practical use.
