The methods used to collect and analyze data in this research include theory-study , participatory observation , interview , survey and case-study ;Furthermore , in the process of the research , the theoretical construction and the study of present situation are interacting with each other. In theoretical construction, the conception of "system theory" helps to make clarify the interaction between technological & vocational education and its environment , that is to point out the unique and historic characteristic of technological & vocational education which is the environmental needs under the social changes . Besides, general education, with its connotation of educating for "being a person", contextualizing with technological & vocational education formulates the ideal of the development of profession which means the combination of specialization and generalization. Therefore , general education in technological & vocational education is defined as:"through the development of profession to combine both specialization and generalization . With a specific vocation as its foundation, and nature science, social studies, humanities, technology and religion as its unfolding dimensions, each of the individuals are facilitated to the continuous and whole growth according to their cognition, skill and attitude to practice in the real life-world." In the investigation of present situation in general education in technological & vocational education, through participatory observation and survey to realize the overall condition of how educational administrative organizations and technological & vocational colleges put general education into practice. Three colleges are chosen for further understanding of detail operation in general education. On one hand, it offers data to construct the theory of general education of technological & vocational education. On the other hand, it presents the characteristics and problems of practicing general education in technological & vocational colleges nowadays. Synthesizing the interaction between theory and present situation , the conclusions are as follows:first, technological & vocational education is a system of autopoiesis;second, general education is a process in which each individual is viewed as a system of autopoiesis ;third, contextualization is prerequisite to technological & vocational colleges to put general education into practice;fourth, the development of profession is the foundation of the theory of general education in technological & vocational education ;fifth, in the present day the proceedings of general education in technological & vocational education haven''''''''t been planned according to the ideals of contextualization and the development of profession;sixth, from the case-study, it manifests that each of the technological & vocational colleges exhibit their unique characteristics in general education . Because of the disparity of general education in technological & vocational education between its ideal and actuality in its initiating stage, this research, therefore, gives comprehensive suggestions to general education in technological & vocational education and also gives some advice to educational administrative organizations, technological & vocational colleges and the further studies.
