碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 英語研究所 === 87 === This thesis argues that you in Taiwan Mandarin is classified into two categories: a verb and an auxiliary. A verbal you is immediately followed by an NP only while an auxiliary you is immediately followed by a verb. When a verbal you is followed by a generic NP, it subcategorized for two arguments (one external argument and one internal argument). When a verbal you is followed by an indefinite but non-generic NP, which subcategories for a descriptive clause, it takes the following NP as its internal argument. An auxiliary you takes a non-generic clause as its complement, in which the subject undergoes a raising movement to the position before you, in line with Huang''s proposal (1990).
