The purpose of this study is to examine both the immediate and long-term effects of Group counseling to social relationship and life adjusting problems on parental divorced children at the 5th and the 6th grades of Elementary School.
First of all, 10 parental divorced children were chosen from the 5th and the 6th graders of Sheng-Li Elementary School at Tainan City for a pilot study. After that, another 20 students were chosen from the 5th and the 6th graders of Chung-Hsueh Elementary School for the experimental study; 16 of them were from parental divorced families and the other 4 from normal marital conjoined ones. These 20 students were divided into Group A and B; each group had 10 members, 8 out of the 16 and 2 out of the 4. For each group there were totally 11 times of group counseling congregations, which were held once a day, 5 to 6 times a week. These congregations lasted 40 to 60 minutes each time. Although Group A participated in counseling activities prior to Group B, it was also assured that Group B followed the same activities.
This study uses Social Relationship Questionnaire and Elementary School Children''s Life Adjustment Scale as test instruments, and the accumulated data were analyzed and statistically dealt with by t-test. Besides, Session Feedback, Group Feedback, and interviews after each course, which were recorded down by group observers or subjects, were useful aids to evaluate the effects of Group Counseling, too.
The results show:
1. There were no significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to the social relationship of parental divorced children.
2. There were no significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to family adjustment, school adjustment and peer adjustment among these parental divorced children.
3. There were significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to individual adjustment and life adjustment among these parental divorced children.
4. There were no significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to the social relationship of male and female parental divorced children.
5. There were significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to individual adjustment, peer adjustment and life adjustment among these male children. But there were no significant exhibitions of immediate effects of Group counseling to family adjustment and school adjustment among these male children.
6. Four weeks after the experiment, there was no obvious progress of prolongation of effects on parental divorced children''s social relationship.
7. There were no significant exhibitions of immediate effects on parental divorced children''s individual adjustment, family adjustment, school adjustment, and peer adjustment.
8. Four weeks after the experiment, there were obvious progresses of prolongation of effects on parental divorced children''s life adjustment.
9. Individual analytic data from both groups show that Social Relationship Growth Group Counseling has positive effects to social relationship and life adjustment among parental divorced students at the 5th and the 6th grades of Elementary School. These subjects declared that they could make friends with many, acquire knowledge, find an outlet for their annoying feelings with their parents and with themselves, and make improvements in their parent and children relationship. They would like very much to participate in this kind of activities again if it is possible, they said.
At the end of this study, a few suggestions were offered according to the results to provide directions for school counseling and future studies.
