In this present research, the formulations of foamed and unfoamed biodegradable plastic were designed by the method of fractional factorial experiment design. The mechanical property test of unfoamed plastics included tensile stress, elongation, Young''s modulus and break energy. The mechanical property test of foamed plastics included maximum loading force, maximum stress, Young''s modulus and tensile energy absorption (TEA). The physical tests of foamed plastics also included the radial expansion ratio (RER) and vertical expansion ratio (VER). Other chemical properties tests included water-soluble index (WSI) and water absorption index (WAI). Thermal properties analysis included DSC as well as TGA analysis. Specimen’s surface structure had been inspected by the scanning electronic microscope (SEM).
It was founded that using cassava starch as the main material with 5% water, 15% PVA, 7% or less glycerol as well as 0.5%~1.0% of PEG, we can produce unfoamed biodegradable plastics with high stress as well as high elongation properties. Besides, using corn starch as the main material, with 0.5% glycerol, 5% water, 1.0% or less polyvinyl alcohol, 10% or less sodium bicarbonates, we can obtain the well-foam biodegradable plastics with highest mechanical property.
