An analysis of the relationship between sixth graders'' laboratory engagement and their views of experimentation.

碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 科學教育研究所 === 87 === The purposes of this qualitative study were to explore fifteen sixth graders'' views of experimentation, their laboratory engagement, and the relationship between students'' laboratory engagement and their views of experimentation. Data were collected during the four months duration through pictorial instance interviews, post-lesson interviews, classroom observation, field notes, and relevant document collection. Constant comparative method was used to analyze and cross-check the data and to construct results, which were validated by triangulation in terms of multiple types and resources of data. The results indicate that most of the sixth graders'' views of experimentation are unsophisticated school science, investigating natural phenomena only, and ignoring the reasoning components. They usually use procedural mode of experimentation, characterized by following the steps and producing a desired outcome. The play mode is to play for its own sake. The modes of engagement and other factors affect students'' views of experimentation simultaneously. Suggestions based on the findings to future research, curriculum design, and science teaching are also presented.
