碩士 === 國立中央大學 === 資訊工程研究所 === 87 === ABSTRACT It always takes much time to install the complete operating system, the application software and to configure the running environment that meets the needs of end-users. Althrough it takes 40 minutes only to install a single Windows 98 system, but it spends too much time to install system on many computers one by one. It is the diffculty, however every system administrator has to face. In order to solve those problems, in this paper we propose a new approach that combinds the disk replication with network multicasting technology. Our proposed method multicasts the exemplar disks to the disks of group computers in the sector-by-sector fashion. Therefore, all of the computers that join the identical disk casting session have the same disk image as the exemplar computer disk. With the help of our proposed system, a system administraor can shorten the total installation time from tens of hours to only one or two hours. Our system has following features:  It provides a fast and efficient method that releases the administration burderns of a cluster of computers.  It provides an efficient and reliable multicast data transfer mechanism.  It works on the lowset level and operates independently of operating system.  It provides different types of service models to increase userage flexiblity. Finally, we make an experiment with our system on 50 PCs that are connected by a seperated and silent Ethernet. The result of that experiment proves that our prototype system completely meets our design goals and releases system administator burden effectively.
