Many kinds of Internet services, such as multimedia, are introduced. These services require huge bandwidth. We improve the switching technique, wormhole routing, in order to get better performance and meet the requirement of bandwidth. Improved wormhole routing is a switch technique based on wormhole routing with an improved operation of buffers in switch elements. Unlike virtual cut-through, when the buffer size is larger than one flit, improved wormhole routing serves each flit buffer as an independent channel for each packet, but not as part of FIFO buffer.[1] We simulate three switching techniques, packet switching, wormhole routing, and improved wormhole routing, in multistage interconnecting networks. When input load is increasing and buffer size remains the same, loss rate is getting higher. In packet switching and wormhole routing, the increasing rate is much higher than in improved wormhole routing, and it affects throughput. It needs more buffer size in packet switching than in improved wormhole routing to get the same loss rate. When buffer size is larger, network delay becomes higher in packet switching, and it also affects throughput. From simulation results, we find that we can get highest throughput, lowest loss rate, and least delay when using improved wormhole routing. Woei Lin 林偉 1999 學位論文 ; thesis 63 zh-TW
