Its ranking in the cause of death is just behind the accident. What we most concern are the quality of living environment and health, especially are these people living near the petrochemical plants and factories in Southern Taiwan. The purpose of this thesis is to identify cases of leukemia in young population from petrochemical industries located in Kaohsiung city and country.A questionnaire interview survey was employed for collection of data about the inhabitants’ lifestyle and exposures to the environment for the purpose of analyzing epidemiologic characteristics in leukemia cases and the health effect of lifestyle and environmental exposure. A case-control design was used for the study. Fourty-five new cases of leukemia below 30 years were collected from 26 towns, villages and cities registered in Kaohsiung city and Kaohsiung country, a matched pairs of control without any malignant neoplastic history with ratio 1:2 were randomly selected from the community. Both of cases and controls were personally questionnaire interviewed by experienced interviewers. Findings from this study indicated that some important information were related to the occurrence of leukemia in young population. Women ate pickled food every week during experience of anemia, and had icterus or other liver diseases before were found statistically significant association with leukemia (pickled food: OR=4.37, 95%CI=1.04~18.44; anemia:OR=10.57, 95%CI=1.25~89.00; icterus:OR=12.56, 95%CI=1.53~103.13). Although the living history of those leukemia cases were not found significant association with the population of petro-chemical industries, the information concerned about the pollution from the petro-chemical industries still has some significance in the epidemiology of leukemia, and will have some value of references for further study in this field.
