Due to the inadequacy of essays, articles and local statistics on hospital design and planning in Taiwan ,the executions of such practice has been largely depended upon the case by case communications and negotiations among hospital administrators, architects, consultants and medical equipment suppliers, rather by scientific information based on evaluations from the hospitals currently in operation.
This research is intended to analyze the systems and typology on the Central Supply Room（CSR）for general hospital in Taiwan, including both spatial typology and organizational systems. Special attentions are paid on the spatial differences between original design of a CSR by foreign planners and its subsequent modifications by its users.
This research is based on an investigation on fourteen CSR from a variety of hospitals ranging from teaching hospitals, regional hospitals throughout Taiwan. The instigation is focused on space planning issues such as room and equipment layout and circulation; as well as management issues such as administrators and organizations. Both factors are cross examined to determine if they are contradictory or complementary.
On the managerial systems, there are types of administrative systems in Taiwan.（Listed as followings：）
1.Concentional System：The CSR are managed by nurses.
2.Supply Processing and Distribution（SPD）System：The CSR are managed by SPD department.
3.Administration System：The CSR are managed by hospital administrators.
Also, there are three types of organizational systems.（Listed as followings：）
1.Conventionals System：The CSR serves the entire hospital including the operational rooms（OR）
2.Doubles CSR System：The hospital is served by the Central Supply Department（CSD）and the OR is served by the CSR/OR（in reference to the Central Sterile Supply Department（CSSD）and the Theatre Sterile Supply Unit（TSSD）in Japan.
3.Modified System：The hospital is served by a Double CSR modified from a conventional system.

Also, there are three circulation types in Taiwan.（Listed as following：）

Based on the typological study the fourteen hospitals listed about and related theories on infection control in hospitals, an evaluation chart for CSR in hospitals in operation will be generated, with special focus on the modifications as a result from responses by CSR users.
It is the intention of this research to provide a CSR design and planning checklist suitable for local hospitals in Taiwan. This checklist shall helpful in design, construction and operational phases of the CSR hospitals.
