This system is generally called ''''the eye-tracking system'''' or ''''the eye-mouse'''', using the technique of eyes tracking and pattern recognition with appropriate hardware and software. People can utilize their eyes with many kinds of actions to operate the computer without hands. This eye tracking system that we developed includes a head-mounted display (HMD) and a pin-hole CCD camera. We called it "optical-type eye tracking system". When the user use the head-mounted display to browse the screen of the computer, the CCD camera will catch the images of user''''s eye and transmit them to the computer. The program in the computer will locate the center-point of the pupil in the images. After we transfer the coordinate of pupil center in the images to the display coordinate, we will get the point which user gazed on the display. We can control the position of the mouse on the display by the movement of eyes. The optical-type eye tracking system is integrated with many application programs, such as the phonetic system, Chinese and English input programs, and dial system. The user can voice, write Chinese or English sentences, and even make phone calls or browse the homepage with his eyes. We continue to engage in the design of the hardware and the software to improve the accuracy, the stability, and more user-friendly operation of this system. The experimental results also showed a linear relationship between the gazed points on the screen and the positions of the mouse. Chern-Sheng Lin 林宸生 1999 學位論文 ; thesis 83 zh-TW
