The purpose of this study is to use the citation analysis to in vestigate the characteristics of papers and citations published in this journa l, from 1992 to 1997. A total of 3,162 references from 179 papers selected in this journal were analyzed. The result indicated that the average number of papers per year of IT&Mwas 29.8, and the average length of the papers were 8. 25 pages. The majority of thefirst author worked in the university, and the to pics of the papers were usually in thesubjects of instructional design and dev elopment, theory and research, computer related, and distance education. A ccording to the characteristics of citation, the average number of citations i n ecach paper of IT&M was 17.66, more than 75% of the citations were Englishli teratures. The vast majority of cited materials were periodicals (40.23%)and b ooks (39.82%), and over half of those were six years old or less. The percenta ge of self-citation by author was 21.62%, and the most highly cited Chinese an d English authors in this period were Tsa-kang Chu and Richard E. Clark. Howev er, Over 50% of the cited materials were from the instructional technology and itsrelated fields.
